About Yalova
Yalva is the provincial capital of the same name, with a population of 100,863. The total population of Yalova Province is 118,998. Yalova has several tourist attractions, including the “Moving Mansion”, which once Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, stayed there during his travels to this pleasant city.
Yalova is also known for its hot springs, which is called the “thermal” area or village. The name Thermae, as it is known, is derived from the Latin word “Thermae” meaning warm, which in ancient times was mainly used to refer to the royal baths of ancient Rome. Another Yalova attraction is the Karaja Botanical Garden, which is located on the thermal route and you can visit this spectacular garden on the way there.
During the Ottoman Empire, Yalova was part of the pin (divisions of the country during the Ottoman period) and was known as Yalakaabad and Yaliva. In 1920, during the Turkish War of Independence, the area was occupied by Greek forces, during which time the Yalova Peninsula was destroyed. Yalova was liberated in July 1921 and finally recognized as Yalova Province in 1995. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk lived in Yalova for the last years of his life and called it “My City” in one of his famous speeches.
Yalova’s climate is warm and temperate. It has hot and humid summers, and mild and humid winters. Most of the rainfall occurs in winter and the average temperature during the year varies from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.
The nearest airports to Yalova are Ataturk and Sabiha Gokcen airports in Istanbul, 100 and 50 km from the provincial capital, respectively. The fastest and easiest way to get to Yalova is to use the fast ferries that depart from Istanbul. You can also reach Istanbul, Bursa and many other cities in Turkey by bus. Minibuses and taxis provide good services for intercity transportation.
